The cover package 100 Best Bars involved some 20 freelancers, 300-plus visits to taverns and pubs and clubs and lounges, a steady tap of beer, and lots of careful editing and fact checking to make sense of all the cryptic notes jotted on the backs of cocktail napkins. The fun and the finessing that followed paid off: This issue, which I coedited with a colleague, was one of the year’s bestsellers.
